The Union Township Civic Center Amphitheater is a familiar community space, hosting summer concerts on select Friday evenings throughout June, July and August. When it was time for a new roof, TruCraft completed the Union Township roof replacement with a new CertainTeed Landmark PRO asphalt shingle system in Burnt Sienna.

The project involved tearing off the existing shingles and installing new underlayment, shingles, gutter apron and drip edge. But once work was underway, the project required something beyond a typical roof replacement.

Addressing Deteriorated Wood

Deteriorated wood was discovered on the underside of the roof and needed to be replaced before the project could be completed.

The existing boards presented an additional challenge: they weren’t a standard size that could simply be purchased and installed. Instead, TruCraft had replacement wood custom milled to match the existing material.

This is an important part of roof replacement work that isn’t always visible in the finished photos. Removing the existing roofing materials can reveal deterioration or damage that needs to be addressed before the new roofing system goes on. In this case, completing the repair correctly meant creating a replacement specifically for the structure rather than trying to make a standard-size material fit.

The before-and-after photos show the deteriorated wood and the newly milled replacement.

CertainTeed Landmark PRO in Burnt Sienna

For the finished roof, CertainTeed Landmark PRO asphalt shingles in Burnt Sienna complement the amphitheater’s brown structural elements and natural surroundings. The dimensional color variation is especially visible across the building’s large, uninterrupted roof planes.

At 27 squares, the roof is also a major architectural feature of the open-air structure. The finished shingle system maintains the warm appearance of the amphitheater while providing a new roofing system over the community space below.

A Local Project in Union Township

For TruCraft, this Union Township roof replacement is particularly close to home. The amphitheater is a space designed to bring people together, and its summer concert schedule makes it a recognizable part of the local community.

The finished project included much more than what can be seen from the ground: removal of the existing shingles, replacement of deteriorated wood, custom milling of replacement material, new underlayment, and installation of the shingles, gutter apron and drip edge.

The result is a refreshed roof that preserves the character of the amphitheater while addressing the conditions uncovered during the project.

Frequent Roof Replacement Questions & Answers

What happens if rotted wood is found during a roof replacement?
Once the existing roofing materials are removed, areas of deteriorated wood that were previously concealed may become visible. Those areas should be evaluated and, when necessary, replaced before the new roofing system is completed. On the Union Township Civic Center Amphitheater, deteriorated wood was discovered and replaced as part of the project.
The existing wood was not a standard size that could be purchased as a direct replacement. TruCraft had new material custom milled to match the dimensions needed for the structure.
The new roof was installed using CertainTeed Landmark PRO asphalt shingles in Burnt Sienna.
After the old roofing is removed and necessary wood repairs are completed, roofing underlayment is installed over the roof deck before the shingles. On this project, the work also included new gutter apron and drip edge.
Some deterioration may be visible during an inspection, but other conditions can remain concealed beneath the existing roofing system. Tear-off gives the roofing contractor direct access to the roof deck and related components so their condition can be evaluated before the new roof is installed.
